Get Started

Albany is a great place to do business! We are a densely populated city within the much larger East Bay market area. We welcome entrepreneurs and value independent and locally owned businesses as well as national retailers in our community. Our staff is committed to helping you navigate through our process, and we hope that you will call Albany "home" for your business.

Get Your License and Permits

Albany is a One-Stop Permit Shop. Start by reaching out to our Community Development Department’s Planning Division if you are a brick-and-mortar business looking to add signage or seeking a change of use for your space. Next, apply for a building permit if you plan to make any improvements to the space. Before you open, obtain a business license through our Finance Department. Be sure to check with Economic Development staff along the way for assistance in navigating through this process.
